E-MAIL CONTAINS FEWER
LIES THAN CONVERSATION
A new study by a
researcher at Cornell University indicates people are more likely to be
truthful in e-mail communications than in other media or even in
face-to-face conversations. The report, to be unveiled in detail at a
human-computer interface conference in Vienna, Austria, this spring, is
believed to be the first study to examine truthfulness in communications
media.

AS UNIVERSITY OF
HOUSTON KNOWS, LEARNING DOESN'T END WITH LICENSING Recent collaboration
between the University of Houston and local technology miner Cyrospace
Inc. is yet another example of how nanotechnology is moving from the lab
into the marketplace. But as the university sees it, the research behind a
product or process -- particularly in nanotechnology -- doesn't stop with
commercialization. It's important for researchers to follow the process
through to licensing deals, product development and eventual deployment
into the real world.

TECHNOSTART TRIES TO
BRIDGE THE GAP BETWEEN INVESTORS AND INVENTORS It sometimes seems like
small tech entrepreneurs arenít always on the same plane as investors.
Some say that this disconnect comes from the fact that many small tech
startups are launched by academics without much experience in the business
world. But a German venture capital firm is trying to bridge this culture
and knowledge gap.

DOUBT CAST ON FREE
RADICAL THEORY
Scientists have
questioned a widely accepted theory for a cause of diseases such as cancer
and arthritis. Many experts believe that molecules called free radicals,
produced when the body fights infection, inflict damage on the body's
tissues. Drugs have been developed to mop up these excess amounts of the
molecules, and thus prevent damage and disease. But research by University
College London, published in Nature, suggests the theory may be incorrect.

ELECTRICITY TELE-PORTATION
Electron disappears
here; electron instantaneously materializes over there. Researchers in the
Netherlands say they've come up with a way to work just that magic. The
method could eventually be used to instantly transport information inside
a quantum computer.

WIRELESS TRACKING: OUT
OF THE SHADOWS
The technologies for
wirelessly tracking the location and status of goods, vehicles and even
individuals have been around for quite a while without gaining a great
deal of marketplace traction. Two years ago, when the U.S. slid into an
economic tailspin, it was no longer enough for Radio Frequency
Identification technology to be cool; RFID tags also had to show business
managers how they could generate a cool profit for the company.
